Glossary "R"

REGIMEN (REJ ih men):
A regulated system of diet, exercise, or medication undertaken for therapeutic benefit.

RESORCINOL (reh SOR sin ul):
Peeling agent sometimes used for the topical treatment of acne. Not believed to be comedolytic.

RETE RIDGE (RET):
Projection from the epidermis which extends downward into the dermis. Helps anchor the dermis and epidermis.

RETENTION HYPERKERATOSIS:
The abnormal pattern of keratinization that occurs in acne. The keratinizing cells within the follicle become abnormally sticky and adherent.

RETINOID (ret ih NOYD):
Natural or synthetic derivative of vitamin A. The retinoids have a wide range of therapeutic applications. Tretinoin is a topical retinoid used in the treatment of acne. Isotretinoin is a systemic retinoid used in the treatment of acne.

RETROAURICULAR:
The crease behind the ear, frequently the site of psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis.

RHINOPHYMA (RYE no FYE muh):
Hypertrophy of the soft tissue of the nose. Occurs in men with severe rosacea.

ROSACEA (roh ZAY she uh):
A condition characterized by erythema, papules, pustules and telangiectasia on the cheeks, nose and forehead.
